There are two things a thief needs in order to bump the lock to your home:
1. A Similar Key: It can be a different lock of the same brand in most cases. If a new subdivision or development was just built, the odds are good the manufacturer of all the locks is the same and you would only need one key from one of the locks in order to make a bump key that fits all the locks of the subdivision.
2. Opportunity: Even though it only takes five seconds to bump a lock, there still needs to be some cover for the person trying to open your door. Let your neighbors know when you'll be out, participate in neighborhood watch, and alert others when you see someone unfamiliar at their door.
There are anti-pick locks on the market that have proprietary, multi-layered, complex locking mechanisms and designs that allow the lock company to control how many blank keys are made and thus reduce the chance of a bump key being effective. These high-end locks are more expensive to purchase and install but if security is something you worry about it might be worth the extra expense.
